Behind the Ancient Port and next to the Archaeological Museum of Thassos is the ancient agora of Thassos. It was the commercial, political and religious center of the island and was a meeting place for merchants and businessmen. 

Construction began in the 6th century BC until Roman times. The agora is a square surrounded by various buildings. The arcades, sanctuaries, altars, buildings were built sequentially without unity. Three gates ensured access to the ancient agora to the port of the time.

The ancient agora of Thassos was discovered by the French archaeological school during excavations carried out during the period 1948-1955. Next to the ancient agora is the Church of Agios Nikolaos, built in 1835 from the materials of ancient buildings.
